Paper Muffin Cups and Protein Muffins

In my adult life I have probably used several million paper muffin cups. When I taught in Detroit I would bring healthy muffins once or twice a week for the kiddos. At that point I had big numbers of kids who either didn't or couldn't bring snacks with them to school. When I taught in Macau I was part of the social committee and we had a Wednesday treat routine as a fund raiser.

You get the picture, muffin liners bought in bulk for many years. Then a simple shift happened.

I bought silicone muffin liners and never looked back. So much less wasteful! And I deeply dislike waste.

I'll take this opportunity to post a recipe that I use weekly for the hubs and I to have healthy easy to grab snacks:

Protein Muffins

3/4 cup flour
1/4 cup oats
60 grams of protein powder (we use chocolate but any would work)
2 whole eggs
100 grams Greek yogurt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2-1 cup veg (amount depend on how liquidity it is. I've used zucchini, roast pumpkin, squash, beets--the flavor mostly blend in so use whatever you've got around)

Bulletin Board: Room on the Broom

This year for Halloween I had both families who were avid celebrators of the holiday, and those who did not celebrate it at all.  To find a nice compromise we did a book study of "Room on the Broom" written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Sheffler. I wrapped the idea around friendship and kindness rather than Halloween and everyone was happy. To make the bulletin board I used the fairy tale printable boarder from Sparkle Box UK, http://resources.sparklebox.me.uk/7000-8000/sb7597.pdf Then I layered construction paper to make the broom and took pictures of the students, teacher, and aides all sitting sideways on a chair against a blank background.  The children asked to add in the animals so I simply copied their pictures from our copy of the book. There are so many wonderful resources for this story and I can't speak more highly of the short film that was made in 2012, it is wonderful!

O Octopus

The kiddos in my class are used to seeing octopus tentacles being grilled on skewers in the market stalls, but making a crafty one wasn't too much of a stretch! I'm happy to report that as a class that data for letter recognition and phonetic sounds has jumped up greatly since I launched the letter collages.

Plarn Project

The kiddos chose what they would like to decorate our screen wall with and a nautical theme won. Kelley fish and beta fish now grace our outdoor wall. The wind moves the plastic strips so nicely. The space has become so much more colorful and fun, hooray reusing!!
